I’ve always been able to see ghosts and spirits, but usually they’re pretty obvious and have features that alert me to their ethereal states. The following case was an exception.

I was a freshman in college driving home late at night from Hilo to Kona for the weekend. It was probably close to midnight when I reached the turnoff to Hakalau about fifteen minutes out of Hilo. There was a lone streetlamp lighting the turnoff and I saw an old man wearing khaki clothes and what appeared to be black riding boots standing in its light. He was wearing a pith helmet. I recall thinking at the time, “This old guy’s out really late at night. He probably has dementia and wandered off. I hope somebody comes and gets him soon.”

I continued driving until I hit the first of the big S curves where I had to drop my speed and saw the same old guy again standing on the side of the road! Needless to say, I was shocked! I passed him as I watched him out of the corner of my eye.

I slowed down to close to 25 mph for the sharpest of the S curves and saw the same old man appear in the middle of the road right in front of my car. I thought, “Old man, you’d better be a ghost!” and waited for the shock of impact. He vanished just before my car would have hit him.

Thinking about his attire later, I realized that it was something that probably dated back to the older plantation days near the turn of the 19th century. My guess was that he was a manager or something similar on one of the sugar plantations in the area.
