Our schools are quite different from Japanese high schools which tend to offer either a college prep or vocational curriculum. For example, I took 4 years of agriculture classes, 4 years of auto mechanics, 2 years of sheet metal and welding and 1 year of photography in addition to college prep classes like French, biology, math, literature and so on. I also took the driver’s education course to get cheaper car insurance (the driver’s license age then was 15.) I played on the school basketball team for a half-year, which was my biggest mistake in high school, since it took up so much time and kept me from practicing the judo and karate that I enjoyed.
