Summer, 1986. A CEO’s daughter in her early thirties came to English class and excitedly told me, “I’m getting married!” I was a bit surprised since she’d just come back from a two-week vacation to California and hadn’t mentioned any marriage meetings or boyfriends in her one-on-one lessons.

I congratulated her and asked her who the lucky man was. She pulled a few photos out of her purse and told me his first name. Apparently, she’d met him in California.

I took one look at the photos and said, “I think you’d better check this guy out. He’s already married to someone.”

She fell silent for a moment and I could tell she was thinking about how to defend her choice, but then she must have remembered my reputation for being psychic and asked, “How can you tell?”

I replied, “You showed me his photo, so I know.”

She said, “Well, this is one time you’re wrong.”

I moved the conversation in a different direction and finished up her lesson. At the end of the lesson she told me that she’d be absent for a month since she was heading back to California to meet her fiance and get married. Her family was quite rich and she worked in her family’s company so she could take that much time off from her job.

Less than a month went by when she called my secretary to reserve a lesson time. I was somewhat surprised since she’d told me she’d be gone for a month, but I pretty much knew what had happened.

I quietly listened as she sobbed out her story. It seems she’d gone to see him and wanted to arrange the wedding, but he balked and finally confessed that he was already married to someone else. He’d planned to come to Japan and file for a divorce from his wife while living with my student until it went through, after which he’d marry her. Of course, he had no money and expected her to pay for the divorce court costs and his trip to Japan.

If my student had been a wide-eyed eighteen year old, she might have bought his story but she was over thirty and saw through his bullshit. If she hadn’t, the probable outcome would have been him coming to Japan, staying with her for a few weeks and then disappearing into the “underground” network of illegal English instructor hippies living in Japan at the time.

In the end, she thanked me and told me that she never would have asked him about being married if I hadn’t told her.
