Sternal Angle (Angle of Louis)

The sternal notch (angle of Louis) is one of the important landmarks I learned in thoracic anatomy. Located below the jugular notch where the clavicles join the sternum, it’s a little depression that can be felt in most people by running your finger from the jugular notch down the sternum. It’s used to find the 2nd rib in rib counting because the 2nd costal cartilage lies directly lateral to it.

It marks the level of division of the trachea, the superior part of the pulmonary trunk, the junction of T4 and T5 (IV disk) and the aortic arch. It also is the marker separating the superior and inferior mediastinum.

It’s one of those anatomical landmarks that seems to like to appear in test questions as well.
