When I was in elementary school our clothesline always had my mom’s surgical masks hanging from it. In those days, nurses made their own masks and were responsible for washing them (uniforms too). My mom washed and reused her surgical masks for several months before sewing new ones.

Today there are disposable masks, but what most people don’t realize is that they can be reused by soaking them in alcohol or boiling* them in many cases. Just because something is labeled disposable doesn’t mean that it has to be so. “Disposable” is often used as a synonym for “convenient.” If you’re short on surgical masks, consider reusing them.

*Boiling will work for most pathogens including the coronavirus, but it may be not be ideal for norovirus situations where the virus is relatively heat resistant.
