My pen-pal friend, Debbie, who lives in Taipei, gave me the following information on how Taiwan is handling the mask shortage. Apparently their government learned something from the SARS epidemic that Japan failed to consider.

To avoid the repeat purchase, our government adjusted the policy to sell the surgical masks at drugstores and pharmacies started on tomorrow (2/6). We will need to present our National Health Insurance (NHI) cards when purchasing masks at the over 6,000 drugstores and pharmacies which contract with the NHI. In addition, we will be limited to only buying two masks per week at present (NTD 5/pc). In order to reduce the crowds of people swarming around stores, people’s NHI cards end with odd numbers will be restricted to purchasing on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and NHI cards end with even numbers will be limited to buying masks on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with both allowed to make purchases on Sundays.

Thanks, Debbie!
