Arm Wrestling Humeral Shaft Fracture

I’m taking “The Basics of Trauma Surgery” course offered as a MOOC by the Technische Universität München (TUM), which is being taught by Professor Peter Biberthaler, MD.

In the course, one of his patients presents with a humeral shaft fracture sustained while arm wrestling. The humerus is the bone in your upper arm that connects your shoulder and elbow and the fact that it can be broken by arm wrestling surprised me.

The patient’s AO classification A2 fracture (slightly severe simple fracture without fragmentation) was repaired surgically using a rod and nails.

According to Dr. Biberthaler, humeral shaft fractures tend to have two peak age ranges, “One among young men following high speed trauma and one among older, female patients following minimal trauma and fractures linked to osteoporosis.”
