People over fifty probably remember being corrected at one time or another by an elementary school teacher for using the word “sweat” instead of perspire. The adage at the time was “Horses sweat, humans perspire” or something similar to it.

I remember my mom’s post WWII nursing texts referring to “perspiration” suggesting that it was the preferred term during her generation. However, today’s medical texts tend to use “sweating” indicating a preference for sweat.

A quick yahoo search showed 32,700,000 results for sweat and just 1,490,000 for perspire, so it’s probably safe to say that sweat is the more commonly used term in 2019.
