Mercari is a marketing app that is popular in Japan (I also understand it’s also in use in the US).

I put up two identical sports chest protectors for karate up in their marketplace and both of them sold at almost the same time.

I boxed the items and took them to the post office the first thing the next morning. I scanned the QR code for the address for the first one and everything went as usual with the shipping label coming out automatically. The next one was rejected with a message telling me that the buyer had used unprintable characters in his or her address. I brought the box home.

I immediately sent the buyer a message requesting that he or she fix her address with a statement saying that if they could do it by noon, I would try another shipment from a convenience store near my workplace for that day. Noon came and there was no message, but I took the box to the convenience store anyway. Their scanner worked and I was able to ship the package.

I tracked it and found that it was delivered to an address in Kamakura the next day just as the first package made it to Shizuoka on the same day.

The buyer in Shizuoka promptly gave me an evaluation and I returned an evaluation and closed the transaction. The buyer in Kamakura didn’t submit an evaluation and I received a notice from mercari saying that their office would automatically close the transaction some two weeks later if there was no evaluation.

1:00pm yesterday was the time when the transaction was to be automatically closed. Less than an hour before its closing, I received an e-mail from mercari telling me that the buyer had finally evaluated the transaction. There was neither an apology message nor even a “thank you.” I was pissed! Still, I reminded myself that there was the one in a million chance that the buyer was an idiot who didn’t understand the system when he or she made the purchase and selected the “Good” evaluation.

People who use mercari should study and understand its system first before buying things to avoid screwing the seller by delaying final payments!
