1969. I was in high school working part-time at a local hotel in Hawaii in the Maintenance Department on weekends. There were many Japanese tour groups staying at the hotel every week. The hotel staff tried to keep them on the same floor because they liked to party and could get quite noisy.

It was early morning and I was watering the lawn on the ocean side of the hotel. Something made me look up and there was this elderly Japanese man standing on the balcony of his second floor room pulling it out to take a leak! I yelled at him in Japanese and he went back in his room looking a bit shocked…

Another problem we had with the Japanese tourists was with water damage. They’d splash water on themselves from the bathtub and sometimes it would leak into the rooms below.

And toilet seats… I don’t know how many I changed while I was there. I still remember the commotion that occurred when an ambulance came to the hotel after a Japanese man broke his leg in the toilet!

A half-century has passed and the Japanese have earned themselves a reputation for being some of the best tourists in the world, but it wasn’t always that way…
