I wrote about the misfortunes that befall visitors who steal rocks from Pele in “Leave the Rocks in Hawaii!” Well, there’s another gentler and kinder side to this Hawaiian goddess that just about everyone in Hawaii knows about.

Here is an account that I heard from many local people. Having watched the business thrive from when I was in elementary school, I have no doubts as to its accuracy.

It seems that the owner of a small retail business (I’ll omit the name here, but I’m sure that anyone in Kona would know the business if I mentioned it) was driving home at night from Hilo to South Kona. Somewhere around Manuka, he saw an old woman in a white dress walking along the deserted highway. Wondering what the woman was doing out in an area where there were no houses at all, he stopped and offered her a ride.

She got in the back seat and he offered her some cookies he had on the front seat with him. She accepted and he drove on on the dark unlighted road. After a while, he looked back into his rear-view mirror and saw that she wasn’t there anymore!

In the days that followed his encounter with the woman, a miracle began to unfold. Customers visiting his store increased and revenues rose steadily. While this might be imaginable in a city with a large population, it was nothing short of miraculous in a small town with a fairly fixed population of shoppers only going to the stores that they normally shopped at. I recall even my parents seeming to make more trips to that store suddenly.

When the shop owner recounted his encounter with the woman, everyone knew that he’d met Pele, the Volcano Goddess who sometimes dresses as a young woman in white. Ignoring her and passing her by usually brings disaster on a person, but befriending her brings great rewards as the shopkeeper found out!

A quick check on the Net revealed that the store is still thriving under the next generation.
