One of the strangest “lessons” I’ve ever taught in my teaching career was an on site private tutoring lesson for an infant (the English conversation school used to call them “going out” lessons, although I used to think that “way out” would have been a more appropriate term for them in many cases).

On site lessons were very pricey and it was rare for individuals who weren’t affluent business executives, rich mama-sans or club hostesses and the like to request private lessons at the place of their choosing.

In one of those rarer cases, I’d been given the address of a home in Takarazuka and had been told that that the client would provide the English materials. The address turned out to be a large house in a rich neighborhood. I pressed the intercom and identified myself. A woman who seemed to be in her thirties opened the door and told me to follow her. A fifth or sixth grade boy came out and I asked the woman if he was the student I was to teach.

She said “No.” and kept walking. She opened the door to a room at the end of the hall and went in. I followed her in and looked around, but only saw a baby lying there fast asleep. She took two children’s story books from the top of a dresser and handed them to me. She said, “Please read books.”

I tried to suggest that she record the books as I read them, but she said, “No. Live English with many native necessary.”

I read the two books over and over and over… (children’s books are short).

My “student” stayed fast asleep, farted and produced bubbles at his mouth from time to time throughout the entire 90 minute “lesson.” After 90 minutes passed, the woman came back in and thanked me, ending one of the strangest hour and a half lessons I have ever “taught.”

Live English with many native necessary.」
